From June 2–3, 2025, 21 journalists from the Volta and Oti regions convened in Hohoe for a transformative two-day training workshop aimed at enhancing their knowledge and capacity to report on nutrition, climate resilience, and sustainable agri-food systems. The training, held at the S5 Hotel, was part of the NKABOM Collaboration, a 10-year initiative funded by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by a consortium of seven Ghanaian academic institutions, including the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health (FNBSPH) at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in partnership with the Association of Ghana Industries.
The training was facilitated by Dr. Charity Binka, Executive Director of the Women, Media and Change (WOMEC). Dr. Binka led participants through a dynamic series of sessions designed to build their understanding of the critical intersections between nutrition, agriculture, public health, and climate change
Despite playing a crucial role in shaping public discourse, many journalists lack the technical knowledge needed to report comprehensively on issues related to food systems, malnutrition, and environmental sustainability. The training aimed to bridge this gap by:
- Introducing journalists to the NKABOM Collaboration and its objectives.
- Enhancing their ability to interpret scientific research and policy documents.
- Promoting responsible and accurate reporting on nutrition and sustainable agriculture.
- Facilitating direct engagement between journalists, researchers, and policymakers.
Through presentations, group work, and site visits to the FNBSPH campus, participants gained hands-on experience and insights into ongoing efforts to create a nutrition-sensitive, climate-resilient food system in Ghana.
Dr. Charity Binka emphasized the media’s role as both agenda-setters and agents of change, underscoring the importance of nuanced and factual storytelling in influencing policy and behavior. She also shared learnings from the AfriCAN Training, previously conducted to build media capacity on similar themes.
Other resource persons included Prof. Francis Zotor, Prof. Frank Baiden, Ms. Roseline Ashigbui, Mr. Selorm Adjoh Anyomi and Mr. Nutifafa Glover, who led various sessions on agri-business, public health nutrition interventions, and agriculture-nutrition linkages.
