On the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, the Women, Media and Change (WOMEC) joins the global community to reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where menstruation is no longer a source of shame, silence, or inequality. The theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” reflects the urgency of collective action to ensure that no girl or woman is left behind because of her period.
At WOMEC, we believe that access to menstrual health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Yet, across Ghana and many parts of the world, menstruation remains shrouded in stigma. This culture of silence prevents girls from attending school, restricts women’s participation in public life, and undermines their health, dignity, and confidence.
We envision a society where media serves as a powerful tool to dismantle harmful myths, educate communities, and advocate for inclusive menstrual health policies. Through storytelling, awareness campaigns, and dialogue, we must challenge cultural taboos and normalize conversations about menstruation at home, in schools, in workplaces, and across all media platforms.
To achieve a truly period-friendly world, we must invest in education, empathy, and equity. Education that empowers young people with accurate knowledge about their bodies; empathy that fosters supportive environments for menstruating individuals; and equity that ensures access to menstrual products, clean water, and hygienic facilities. These are not luxuries they are necessities for dignity and development.
This day is a reminder that we must work together as educators, parents, journalists, health professionals, and community leaders to ensure every girl and woman has access to accurate information, safe spaces, and the materials they need to manage their periods with dignity.
WOMEC renews its dedication to building platforms that empower girls, amplify women’s voices, and push for a future where menstrual health is seen not as a side issue, but as central to gender equality and social justice.
Let us stand together, speak up, and act—for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.
