Executive Director: Charity Binka

CHARITY BINKA is a professional journalist and a gender studies lecturer working passionately for an equal playing field for both men and women. She has  devoted a greater part of her life to working towards the empowerment of women. She is committed to giving women public voice and visibility. This is premised on her belief that to create a demand for women as leaders, they must be seen and heard in the public arena. She holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree obtained from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and a Master of Arts degree in Gender and Development from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, United Kingdom.

She was the Ghana Team Coordinator of a British Council/DFID funded project, the Virtual Newsroom Project that linked 80 female journalists from eight African Countries to produce a monthly web- based Monthly Newspaper called the “Africawoman”.

Charity rose to the rank of Editor-in-Chief at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation in Accra before leaving after 18 years. She now lectures at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), where she also doubles as the manager of the GIMPA Gender Development and Resource Centre.

Charity previously worked with the African Newspapers of Nigeria Limited in Ibadan, publishers of the Nigerian Tribune and Sunday Tribune. She worked as a columnist and senior reporter for four years. She became the Acting Ogun State Correspondent, based at Abeokuta, Nigeria, before leaving for Ghana in
1986.

Charity has made several presentations on gender and media issues both at the national and international levels. As a journalist, Charity covered many international conferences and proceedings at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA.
She was on a number member of government delegations to the UN for the Review Meeting of the Status of Women and the Beijing +5 and +1O Review Meetings

She serves on several boards, including the International Institute for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) Journalism, Penplusbytes, the World Association of Christian Communicators and the Steering Committee of the Gender Responsive Skills and Community Development Project of Ministry of Women and Children’ Affairs, African Development Bank and the National Working Committee of the African Women’s Decade. She is also the member of the World Association of Christian Communicators.
